I read something recently where the person said that if you try to please everyone in the audience, you're playing it safe, and the end result will be generic. Taking risks is what sets you apart, for better or for worse. In this thread, I'm saying I'm not a fan of a lot of the risks NaS takes, but I guess his bravery for taking those risks at all is commendable.
I mean, I'm talking about the main body of his work. You think I should call the guy the greatest rapper of all time, but only if you ignore the majority of his albums, and just listen to the first one and the last two?
true story - i am the king of doing that song karaoke. proven fact i also rock the house w get down everytime or made ya look or xmas in hollis
Eseph, you and I both know -- now that you have opened the door to it by mentioning it -- that this thread has failed, if it does not end with you sharing a recorded version of your karaoke take of One Mic.
I think our relationships with art/artists is complicated, and even moreso with complicated artists like NaS (re: he's one of the best, but has a lot of bad work). The day I created this thread, I thought he sucked, tomorrow I'll call him the goat, haha. I'm just trying to lean away from the fawning that a lot of people default to with NaS -- saying he's one of the best ever feels like an oversimplification at best, and just false at worse -- and lean more into the fact that my feelings about this guy's music are complicated and always changing. Same goes for Jay-Z, but he's kind of boring to talk about, comparatively.
Anyway, discourse went well, and made me think more about it.
"Someone disagrees with my s**tty opinion, please get rid of this."
You probably also were marching outside of Netflix HQ the other day to get The Closer taken down because Dave Chappelle said some s**t about trannies AKA the d**k girls you hook up with on a regular basis.
This is all s**t you should be saying into a mirror. You're on some 8 year old "I know you are, but what am I?!" type s**t right now. Stop projecting onto other people. Like I said before, you jump back and forth between acting like a f**kin toddler and a grumpy old man that doesn't get "today's music". Legit the worst kind of poster. Drink Clorox.
Eseph, I like Get Down and Made You Look and that's it on God's Son.
I don't think it's NaS sucking based on that statement. It's you. C'mon, that album has so much to it.
NaS is an artist that some people try to put in a box. I want Illmatic again. I want a NaS album with Large Pro/DJ Premier. How about just enjoy the best rapper ever?
I notice myself doing what you are doing with athletes. Do I break down LBJ against the GOATs and complain about his FT%, sure? But that's just dumb, he's one of the greatest ever and won't be around much longer. Enjoy LBJ, enjoy NaS.
And, 88 you're my dood, but admitting you haven't listened to any of his albums the past 9 years isn't a great look to a "NaS Kinda Sucks" thread. That's some of his BEST work.
88 Got me listening to some NaS today. Hoping some of you haven't heard this track...
I bought this CD compilation from Landspeed Records back in the day. I'm not sure if this track was ever released otherwise. The production credits were never listed so it's always been a mystery to me (even though it seems obvious now)...just found out it was produced by Dr. Dre. Track is so f**king fire.
