2002
the year i graduated high school's best HIP HOP albums by eseph84
insight - updated software Nas - the lost tapes j-live all of the above Boot Camp Clik - The Chosen Few skitzofreniks - enter the realm Cormega - The True Meaning 7L & esoteric - dangerous connection Nas - God's Son mr lif - emergency rations ep / i phantom AZ - Aziatic
i am well aware of all the great albums that also came out this year like blazing arrow, ost, eyedea, talib - quality, el da sensei, edan - primitive plus, count bass d, camron, el-p (no thanks)
non phixion (i know this is some of you's favorite that year, but never quite was for me, main reason might be i didnt have a copy til the re-release a few years later)
oh yeah beatnuts, devin the dude, gza - legend of the liquid sword. k-os was super ill. the jazzy jeff comp.! almost forgot about ed o.g. - wishful thinking ep! when i go home later i'll find a few more i probably forgot. paul barman - paullelujah even though i've only owned it a few years now. a great one, too!
but yeah, as you can see i was heavily into the east and the beantown scene and still am and for better or worse, my list pretty much is ranked the same as it was back then.
what's your top ten from 2002?

the oliver hart album is cool but i dont really go back to it that much these days, i usually just listen to by the throat lol. if i made a list 10 years ago it would be on there though. same with movies for the blind, from divine, black mamba serums, night hawks etc.
and yeah i wasn't feeling electric circus that much when i first heard it but that album has grown on me a ton, production there was super forward thinking and still sounds good imo. gotta be a top 5 common album for me

yeah i remember common's e.c. having enough quality tracks on it to hold me over til BE in 05. at the time most just called him soft and blamed erykah badu for this albums out there sound but i could dig it. gotta bump it again and see how it aged. some of the stuff on my list did sound a lil diff now than then but again it didn't shake up the list too much.
did you like commons album from this year?

listening back to the nas gods son and aziatic is reminding me that their was some pretty cringe songs on those like zone out w bravehearts, the song w kelis on gods son & take it off and take care of me on aziatic, etc. smh. luckily the other songs make up for those so i forgive them.

is it weird that i like emergency rations better than i phantom album? even though i wrote i phantom in my top 10 i meant emergency rations... however, both together as a whole give a strong argument that lif was the artist of the year that year imo. second being nas. would ya'll agree?

nope.
2002 was a weak year for hip hop ... if I have to nominate an artist of the year, it would either be el-p (his album was a nice progression if the co-flow style, plus his label made some noise) or the roots (album is inconsistent but the highlights are dope as f**k, an they played some incredible live sets).
album of the year for me would be "all of the above" because j-live is one of the smartest hip hop guys I met in my life, plus it's his strongest longplayer besides his shelved payday debut ... or maybe "deadringer" since I really loved it back then ... I dunno ... hip hop sucked in 2002...
