It's kinda baffling to me how anyone who's ever been a fan of Gang Starr can listen to this and have negative things to say but then I remember where I'm at.. smh

^ just being real. some will auto love and blindly eat it up. preemo is the main issue- from some boring samples, thin drums, out of sync lyrics, boring beats. yes some verses sound like throwaway guru verses or practice runs but not a huge deal. preemo doesnt have those hard drums or more abstract raw samples he had in the 90's. its an OK album with a few great songs but watch all the stans worship this s**t! i wanted to love it but it is what it is. preemo doesnt have the quality control he used to have either. still glad its out. dont be mad that someone thinks its just OK.

Ain't mad. Just know the experience I had listening to it was very different from a few of the responses shared here and it's surprising to me because it legitimately invoked something enjoyable for me. If my love for Gang Starr is on auto-pilot, so be it. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

not mad at anyone for loving the album but to me its just so far from the sound that made gang starr great. i'm not even really a fan of "the ownerz" album- i like about half of it and "one of the best yet" is weaker then the ownerz imo. still glad the album was released cause i think theres about 5 great tracks on there.

first of all, to each his own ... but imo you're wrong because the sound that really made gang starr great was the sound of "step in the arena" and "daily operation" NOT "moment of truth" (although it's a great album) ... reducing preemo's work to "hard drums" and "abstract raw samples" (wtf does that mean???) makes clear you don't really understand what he brought to the table in the early 90s and how much impact his way of manipulating samples had on lots of dope producers ... today it's almost impossible to have a discussion on dj premier's production with guys who haven't been around when the 2nd and 3rd gang starr albums were released - back then, gang starr were underground like main source or organized, guru & premier did their own thing and developed a unique style inspired by jazz aesthetics ... preemo is the innovator of minimalist production, and he enhanced his signature sound ... he's a true musician, progression is his motivation ... and real musicians don't really give a f**k about non-musicians' opinions, they do it for the love of the art...
tbh, I don't know if "one of the best yet" will stay in heavy rotation for a long time, but since I deleted the interludes as well as "get together" and cut out the j cole and kweli verses, it's a strong listen at the moment ... and of course I'll support this album and buy a physical copy to give props to those who really deserve it...
peace

^maxxxx, chill bro
wtf are you talking about? lol ,I didnt say moment of truth was what made gangstarr great cause the opposite is true. step in the arena showed his crates were deep, that he could use samples in a next level way, add some sub bass for beats that thumped and have change ups in his beats like the track "take a rest". showed his dj ability too. then on daily operation he started coming with the harder drums, more abstract samples and further showcased what made him great.
2nd of all- i didnt reduce his work (2nd time you assumed and put words in my mouth). seems like your assuming s**t in order to talk down to someone as a way to feel superior...
3rd - you assume i wasnt around when those albums dropped! LOL- i'm 41 and i bought all those as they dropped and i have understood what they brought since the mid 90's man!
preem wasnt as minimalist on step in the arena in some respects and many know his sound got way more repetitive and streamlined starting around '95 when his signature drum pattern was present in many of his beats and those same (piano) and other signature looping techniques were present in many of his beats. wrath of the math was all hard drums with pretty abstract samples for example. moment of truth was a big change with him sampling more soul type records and less jazz and the beats were cleaner etc. a step back creatively, i would argue after hard to earn(maybe their best album)
preemo is certainly appreciated by those who know for always having those hard and/or jazzy raw drums and jazzy and abstract samples( especially on hard to earn, sun rises etc.) so i'm right about that.
so theres that. haha

on the positive tip preemo did a great job in many respects, from the illness of like half the beats, the foundation all over the album, bringing guru back, creating, promoting and pushing this album is dope. glad it was released. heard him say it was a weird experience where he was feeling many different emotions during the process. cant imagine. props to the legend for doing the album and i DO think he still has IT but is just experimenting with different sounds etc. cant do the exact same s**t forever.

STOP IT ALL - this s**t is wack.
Like somebody said - you hear vocals spliced in, Guru not on beat, mixmaster horrible, beats not even sounding like Premier, horrible feats - Foundation rusty. Q-Tip doing a Griselda hook. What I'm Here 4 hook...no 2nd listen for me...f**k this digiage...new Brother Ali produced by Evidence is way better.

^ you got the nerve to complain about horrible features and ask for an album from below average rappers produced by the same guy who did this album? okay, seems like you know what you're talking about...

s**t is bad really.
that dx article is weird as hell. to hear preem mentioning solar so many times and how a lot of gurus verses came from solar. album tarnished. and preemo with the sage and the ashes on the mirror was getting more witchcrafty than i took preemo for. dope though. i would have got those verses the illegal way. lay down solar.

I like it, it's not great and I didn't expect it to be.
You guys need to remember that those are throwaway Guru verses from his years with Solaar and he didn't wrote/spit those rhymes for those beats or any other Dj Premier beat. Taking this into consideration you can see that DJ Premier made a good blending work there, but you still can tell somehting it's not totally right.
You gotta be crazy if you were expecting this album to be on the same level than the previous ones for obvious reasons. It shouldn't even be called an album since they didn't work on it together... But it's not bad either

I was surprised when i heard primo had to buy the verses from solar, like obviously they were dope and worth it but surely primo hasa s**t tonne of guru verses no? Or maybe he wanted these because they were more recent and he hadnt heard them.

Or maybe he wanted these because they were more recent and he hadnt heard them. This is pretty wild. If you think about the energies on albums. For all that pain around Guru's death and the infighting, then Premo buys and gives Solar money for verses. This shows that Premo had an undying love for Guru. And he worked hard on this to "bring it back from Solar" Whole thing sound spiritual like Primo was trying to get Guru's spirit back. The thing is - would Guru have wanted this? Who knows. Guru should have forgiven premo in the end I think. I heard Preem visited him in the hospital. I think Premo worked hard on this and for a purpose. What are the top 3 tracks on it? Bless.

LOT GOIN ON IN HERE. ALBUM IS FAR FROM PERFECT GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES BUT I LIKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS. IF YOU'RE LIKE ME AND THOUGHT WE'D NEVER GET ANOTHER GANGSTARR ALBUM IN OUR LIFETIME, YOU CAN APPRECIATE DJ PREMIER AND ALL THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTED'S EFFORTS FOR DOING SOMETHING THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DO.

crumple listen to diamonds are forever by gangstarr featuring j cole. surprisingly guru and j cole pair very well on the mic and it is one of the best songs on there.
