Rawkus had some heavy hitters in the late 90s/early 2000s. They brought together some of the best talent for this compilation, and not just artists on their label. Mos Def and Talib Kweli were on top of their game. Pharoahe Monch was rapping incredible. It even had a hungry Eminem rapping in his natural voice back when he was just having fun over a dope Beatminerz beat. The production on this album is amazing. Hi-Tek, Diamond D, Lee Stone, DJ Spinna, Evidence, El-P, Nick Wiz....a wide variety. Album flows very nicely, a few interludes with artists talking that aren't overly long or stupid. There are a couple songs I could do without, not a big fan of B-Boy Document '99, just don't like that sample. The Company Flow song isn't that good, even if the subject matter is pertinent. And the RA the Rugged Man track isn't that good. But overall a really excellent compilation and a great representation of late 90s underground hip hop. Thoughts on this album? The first Soundbombing is also dope, but I like this one more and it rates as one of the best compilations ever.

I should add that DJ Babu and J Rocc of the Beat Junkies do a fantastic job mixing this. Excellent scratching and sequencing/blending of tracks.

Eminem was the reason this got checked out. Let’s be honest.
Part 3 was better. That’s the one with the styles p joint.

Too many great compilations especially around that time to call this or any of the series the best ever for me but I definitely loved them. Rawkus was killing it back then.

Soundbombing 3 was pretty damn mediocre. Not a chance that is better.
For the average hip hop fan, they may have checked this album because of Eminem. At the time I was more interested in Common, Mos, Talib, Dilated Peoples, etc.

This is universally called a classic by ughh heads but I never really liked it. Isn't the Eminem song "Any Man" That song sucks.

Haha yes Any Man. Fair enough, I think the beat is dope, it is the playful and funny side of Eminem before he got all bitter and angry.

I liked the Eminem song back in the day but I don't now. I gotta play the whole album again though for a fair shake.

Wow that is coincidental. Written today. I beat them to it!
8.6 is pretty much exactly how I would rate it too haha.
That's probably my favorite track. That Hi-Tek beat is butter. The turntablism leading up to it is ill too.

So going back this is half dope as f**k to me and half forgettable but given that thers interlude tracks and what not. This is a really good comp. I don't miss this era in ughh but thers a grip of great timeless songs on here. I don't agree with that rating maybe a flat 8.0 but ok. If anyone wants to buy Brooklyn hard rock 12 I have it for sale btw.

I can agree with that. The Pharoahe Monch songs are great. As that Pitchfork article mentioned, hip hop was sort of going through a transition towards the end of the century. The Common verse on 1-9-9-9 is fantastic btw. This was another very good compilation by Rawkus. It was the first major indy label to the best of my recollection. They put out a lot of dope s**t, before gradually falling off.

Yea I liked the shabaam sahdeeq and monch joint. Also that 7xl track is great. I think even r.a. the rugged man hates that song to. He said it on the bonus DVD to one of the CDs I have.

Those any man verses sounded better as "freestyles" over reused beats sadly.
