DJ Shadow releases an ambitious double album - Our Pathetic Age - on Mass Appeal. Our Pathetic Age is the result of an intensely creative period that found the hip-hop and electronic innovator delving further into original composition and experimentation. The first half of Our Pathetic Age features 11 new instrumental works that balance some of Shadow’s most menacing sounds with beams of hope, including his first fully composed orchestral piece.
The second half of Our Pathetic Age is a full album of vocal collaborations, ranging from Run The Jewels, Nas and Dave East to Sam Herring, Paul Banks and Wiki, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon. Shadow notably reunites with his early Solesides collaborators Lateef The Truthseeker and Gift of Gab (Blackalicious). It also features St. Louis MCs Rockwell Knuckles and Tef Poe, fellow Bay Area musicians Fantastic Negrito and Jumbo is Dr.ama, and Brookyln MC Stro.

I've had little interest in Shadow's later career, but his 90s output is supreme.
Will check this out with a grain of salt.

i agree. hit and miss shadow since the late 90's but at least he has always pushed the boundaries and made it interesting. some mind blowing ish on his last album but some over the top electronic aspects on some songs.

start with his beat he did with automator on the dr. octagon album in 1995 then try his solo album from 1996 which is next level. same time dj krush came out and many legends were bigging up both of them who proved they were next level. you always think some things are universally known until del's towel boy informs you! lol

cosign no mask, shadow's debut album was amazing, same goes for most of the 12"es he released since the early 90s, especially "what does your soul look like" ... and in my book, shadow's version of "meiso" is a top 3 remix of 96 ... even the "private press" album was dope, same formula with a more polished sound...
...but imo, krush was never on the same level, he never had a groundbreaking style or a signature sound like shadow...

My dj shadow 90s comp:
Intropy Entropy Building steam with a grain of salt The number song Alright Changeling Movin on What does your soul look like 4 In flux Hardcore instrumental hip hop Swimming upstream Best foot forward Lost and found Perilous journey What does your soul look like 3 Mutual slump Unreal Organ donor Don't try it Why hip hop sucks in 96 Atmospheric disturbances What does your soul look like 2 Mellow but chunky Midnight in a perfect world Mapalm brain What does your soul look like 1
Lost and found is a masterpiece of a trip hop song. So is midnight in a perfect world. Two of the best songs of the 90s.

^i agree krush wasnt on shadows level early on but certain tracks were up there. krush never had the game changing album either as many of his albums were hit and miss. krushes best imo is kaukusi which is pretty impressive and different. krush proved later in his career that he was up ther next to shadow with creativity, technical s**t, instrumentation and overall beat making.

tbh, my favorite krush album is "cosmic yard" as I like almost 2/3 of the tracks...

preemptive strike is a nice double disc showcase as well. important comp. and all his mixes too like brain freeze, product placement and diminishing returns etc.
krush's mesio has high moments and so does his monthly mixtape series from 2013, message at the depth, stepping stones series and others. a lot to take in but krush was important.
