While Aceyalone has always been one of my favorite MC’s of all time, I feel like he’s never gotten the respect and admiration of some of the other legends out there….especially on the West Coast.
He, Myka, and Freestyle Fellowship basically kicked off the entire Cali underground movement. There are a lot of sounds that definitely wouldn’t have existed without their contributions.
With that said, Acey has always stood out to me as the most talented and gifted MC from the West…his cadence and ability to make it always sound like he’s freestyling is just second to none. He makes everything sound so effortless, as if he’s in a cypher all by himself. His albums range from super creative and unique (A Book of Human Language) to just straight up banging hip hop (All Balls Don’t Bounce) to more melodic and soulful (Grand Imperial). He just has it all to me. He can make songs about anything and I guess that’s where his freestyle vibe comes in.
To me, he’s nothing less than an absolute legend and one of the best MCs to ever pick up a mic.

GP. Book of Human Language definitely one of my favorite albums of all time and one I go back to frequently.
Magnificent City had all kinds of styles on it.
That dancehallalbum was terrible to me though lol. I blind bought that s**t at a bookstore with a CD section back in the day.

Well, you know I agree. ABOHL and the first Haiku De'tat album are two of the best albums ever, IMO. Which also brings up Ab, who is even more overlooked being part of the 2nd gen after the Good Life OGs. Just mentioning him because the "A-Team" go hand in hand to me in the sense that they really go for the jugular in battles and just want to put whoever they are up against down and clown the f*** out of them wheres Myka is just beyond that level and sometimes sounds like he doesn't even care about battling because he knows he could easily serve if he wanted to. Acey also put out some questionable material when he was trying to branch out a bit but nothing will ever take away the pure skills that are always evident whenever he holds a mic.
They definitely don't get the shine they deserve in the mainstream media so I welcome anytime someone does but in the real world, every time I meet someone really knowledgeable about hiphop, they always know where respect is due. Plus, FF did get a Grammy nomination last year for Best Historical Album. Even though they didn't win, they are now in the history books for having the first and only HipHop album ever nominated in that category. Doesn't mean much to a lot of people but a nod that there are people in the mainstream also recognizing their contributions.

Book of Human Language is a classic and one of the best albums ever made imo. Nothing like it. I think the Dancehall album is Lightning Strikes? lol. Yeah Acey always tries new styles. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Pretty much a miss on that one.

You’re right that other underground heads who know s**t know FF and Acey and their contributions. Been to shows where the artists always give them props. I just wish they were looked at closer to guys like Doom and Keith, who are seen as legends by most.

All I can say is time will tell. FF is still putting out quality material and only building up more and more respect with those in the know the more they don’t get it elsewhere. I mean, he even made a song about all the Knownots in the world.

Had no clue Freestyle Fellowship got a Grammy nomination. Interesting.
Aceyalone is great, a top 20 MC ever. This thread inspired me to listen to Accepted Eclectic today. He has a range of cadences for sure, he uses his voice as an instrument. Lyrically he covers lots of different topics. On this album for instance he had an entire song about hardships and overcoming challenges. Then another one about people not being able to control themselves when being drunk or high. He can spit battle rhymes in a clever way. He raps about himself and life in a vivid manner with thought-provoking metaphors.
A Book of Human Language is an incredibly deep album, been a while since I listened to that album.

Del’s flow on No Need For Alarm influenced so many bums from Cali.
There should be an appreciation thread just for that.

Accepted Eclectic is dope because it’s exactly what the title suggests it might be….a very eclectic mix of styles and genres, but still true to hip hop. It’s a pretty solid album for sure.

Yeah I liked the beats for the most part too. Evidence and Joey Chavez had some good contributions. A few tracks I didn't care for, like Golden Mic is a sort of cheesy beat. It's like a 7/10 for me.
That's one of the more poignant songs. A nice self-reflective song over a chill piano beat.
