Capital Punishment- 8.44/10
Damn, this is a long album! Biggest gripe is the long-winded skits. Back in 1998 this was somewhat common, particularly on big label releases. Pakinamac is kind of funny, but I can do without that type of stuff now.
For a mainstream rapper, Big Pun kept it street. I don't know about his subsequent releases, but this stays true to his roots for the most part. Even the mainstream songs like Still Not a Player is better than 95% of the s**t you hear on the radio nowadays. Still isn't really my jam. Punish Me is weak. He had major label appeal so he sort of had to make stuff like that. Caribbean Connection lives up to the title of the song, cool reggaeton sound to it.
Boomerang is such a sick track, that has to be one of VIC's best beats ever. Reading the album inlay, I completely forgot that he was a part of the Beatnuts at one point. He made a pretty good career for himself as a solo producer. The Dream Shatterer - banger. Domingo laced Pun with a uptempto beat and Pun crushes it. Damn dude could spit crazy, unbelievable breath control and rapping strictly from a technical standpoint. Lyrically on point too. Super Lyrical is a great display of two different style with Black Thought and Big Pun. The beat isn't my favorite, but it is kind of cool and works well for the vibe of the song. There are a lot of prominent 90s artists on this album. Tres Leches is a dark beat from RZA, Prodigy and Inspectah Deck kill it. I wish it were a little harder track though.
Overall it is a solid album, but it falls short of being amazing for me. That might be a somewhat controversial opinion because most people seem to talk about this album as a bonafide classic, but the production doesn't really stand out to me, plus there are many similar sounding beats. Combined with the skits it isn't an album I come back to often. More than enough good songs though to make it worthwhile, might need to fast forward though.

S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M.- 9/10
When I think of lyricism, I think of this album. One Be Lo covers so many topics: social inequality, poverty, crime, materialism, greed, jealously, love, addiction, among many other things. He also can hit you with some battle rhymes. His enunciates his words clearly, which is something I have come to appreciate in my older years. He is what I would call a multi-faceted MC. He also produces 8 songs on the album. Decompoze, his long-time associate and who collaborated on the Binary Star album, is an expert crate-digger. Some very somber beats that match the lyrics, thought-provoking songs that make you pomder life. Rocketship is Decompoze’s most uptempo beat, a piano line that carries the song mixed with some vocal samples that weave in and out. Really something else, love that song. Majestik Legend produces three songs, I remember him as the runner up in the 2002 Scribble Jam MC battle, but he proves himself capable on the boards. He raps on a couple of songs too.
Fantastic album. There are maybe only a few songs that fail to move me. One Be Lo has a lot of material, I have inspired to listen to all his music after listening to this today.

Big Pun - Capital Punishment 10/10. Ghostface Killah - The Big Doe Rehab 8/10. Ghostface always been in my top 10 and this is a nice album. The P Brothers - The Gas. 7/10. "Cold World" and the 3 Roc Maricano tracks were the highlights. The rest was OK.
Dilated Peoples and One Be Lo but I could never get really into those albums or the acts themselves just never did it for me honestly. The Platform has a few nice tracks I remember. I'd give them both 7/10 until I revisit

SONOGRAM is the only album on that list I still regularly listen to. 8/10 or 7/10 depending on how I'm looking at it but overall, it's an album that stands out to me.
The Platform was cool at the time for the impact it made for that crew movement but no huge appeal to me. 6-7/10
The other ones, I never cared about enough to give a rating for but there are tracks I don't mind hearing from them when they come up.

The Platform- 7.95/10
Just listened to this driving around in the car (which is the best place to listen to music). Whenever I think of Dilated I think of b-boy music. Maybe that is because I went to several of their shows in the early 2000's and they repped the culture hard. Them, Jurassic 5, Ras Kass, the Alkaholiks, Freestyle Fellowship...they were kind of the face of LA underground hip hop during that time. Album starts out with a banger from Alchemist, this is when he was just coming up, he was less concerned with heavy layering, just in your face boom bap. That's the best track by far imo. The Main Event, Ear Drums Pop, The Last Line of Defense, Work The Angles, those are all dope. There is a cohesive sound to the album, nothing that sounds out of place. Lyrically Evidence and Iriscience keep it pretty standard, rapping about how tight they are and whatnot. It works. Cool album, but there aren't enough standout great tracks for me to put it in the 8s, very close though.

I love these “rate the album” threads.
It’s the best when they’re actually really good albums and not a whole bunch of obscure only 3 peeps heard it and you had to be there albums.
There’s only one classic in this group and y’all know it.
Big Doe is the next one. Slept on album. Is this the one that starts off with the Beanie Segal feature? That sht is the hardest s**t I ever heard.
“I’ll blow a ngga for a box of Huggies” did not age well tho.

The Gas is the only album I thought was somewhat obscure. I guess SONOGRAM is in a way, but One Be Lo is a fairly well-known underground rapper, at least I think so. I dunno.
I listened to Big Doe Rehab today. Yolanda's House and Paisley Darts are excellent songs. Yapp City is dope. There are a few others. We Celebrate is kind of wack. Not a remarkable album but Ghost is always entertaining and is good at picking dope beats. I could see it being 8/10 exactly.

The gas I'm literally currently listening to and its overrated still. The boss money joints are actually my favorite. I feel the same about that one be lo album that its an ughh.com overrated album. Its too long. Same could be said for the pun but he's eons better of a lyricist than one be lo. Capital punishment is a top 5 rap album for me. So classic and pun is definitely in my personal top 5 doa rappers. Big doe rehab is underrated. Go listen to "slow down". And dilated have always been solid but prefer just babu and ev beat tapes.

The Gas is dope as hell. I'm gonna listen later today and post my thoughts, but I can say right now that will be my highest rated album, unless my opinion has completely changed. Gritty album, right up my alley.
Couldn't disagree more about Pun being lyrically eons better than One Be Lo. Pun is nice as hell and certainly deserves all the praise, but to me One Be Lo has so much more depth to his lyrics. He has a refreshing perspective coming from an educated, almost philosophical, point of view. He composes his verses beautifully.

Pun is an icon. He also was mainstream and had way more exposure. Does he have any other good albums? Serious question. I have only heard Capital Punishment.
Masters of the Universe could be slightly overrated I will agree with that. That's a good album though. I think a lot of underground hip hop fans love it because the theme of that album is to expose the phoniness of commercial rap. There are a few songs created specifically to target the wack thug commercial aspect of the mainstream. Backpackers in the early 2000s gobbled that stuff up. And to be fair Binary Star was spitting the truth.

The Gas- 8.7/10
Just finished listening...not as good as I remembered but still very good. This is the perfect winter album, cold dramatic bracing beats and vivid street NY raps. That's basically it. There are a couple tracks that aren't good, particularly Digital B-Boy. But overall dope. The spiraling guitar on Don't Question Me is superb, if you check the YouTube comments you will see a comment I made eight years ago lol. P Brothers flipped the Dionne Warwick sample on New Religion so damn nice. Those are the two best tracks, excellent stuff.

Aeokq is prime example of a dude who can take criticism on an album he likes and not act like he penned the f**kin thing. Salute man.
Pun doesn't have any other good albums but u could definitely add the best tracks on yeah baby and put em as bonuses on capital punishment.
Cosign new religion being a dope a** song to.
