Yeah. It’s not a debate anymore. Nas is the greatest rapper to ever do it. And I think it’s going to be impossible to ever top. You’d need to come out with literally the greatest hip hop album of all time as a teenager, destroy one of the best (Jay Z) in a battle and be in the game for over 30 years. Oh and be born the same year hip hop was invented. lol he was actually 20 when Illmatic dropped but ye fair enuff

True. Nas was 20 when Illmatic was released.
Parts of NY State Of Mind, Represent and a couple others were written when he was 16.
Regardless of his age he was dumb young writing rhymes light years ahead of OGs and legends that been in the game for a while.
His dad is a fkn jazz musician. It’s ridiculous.

I say that sht to say this….
Nas is the closest thing to pure unadulterated hip hop manifested into a human being that we’ve ever seen and probably ever will.

this really is a f**king glorious album.
Fever up until Sitting with My Thoughts is a perfect run of tracks, 0 skips.
It's probably just because I've listened to the later tracks less but I'm not as keen on Blue Bentley, Japanese Soul Bar, Speechless 2 and 1-800... yet. Jodeci Member is dope.
The Smokey Robinson sample on the track with Lil Wayne is beautiful
The beat for Based on True Events 1 might be my favourite of the year.

After much reflection, imma say Magic 2 & 3 are Nas lyrically at his weakest. Basically auto pilot.
Something was bothering me about this last album in particular, and I think I figured it out this morning. It lacks depth. It’s like Nas got the idea to put out two trilogies at the same time and rushed to drop these last two albums. I mean Magic 3 came out like what? 2 or 3 months right after 2?
Don’t get me wrong…auto pilot Nas is nicer that 90% of everybody, but the last two Magic albums aren’t in the same league as Magic 1 or Kings Disease 3. Yeah you can quote a line or even a whole verse from these last two, but you can tell he was running out of steam.

And you can tell because the beats on this are almost desperate to be great. They’re really good but they break it down too much and pull the drums to make Nas lyrics seem deeper than they are. That’s cuz he needed that. They was running outta steam big time.
Pick your least favorite song off Magic or KD3 and put it up against these last two. You can see the decline

He's underground now in terms of success whether or not you think he's underground in style

Nas is no different than Blu and Kendrick , they all rap about how much of a legend they are without songs of any substance
