Taking the 38 minutes and 19 seconds to listen to this now. I don't think I will have the same positive opinion as everyone else.

Criticisms:
The Conway track feels out of place. The beat is a sifferent style.
The opening track also doesn't feel right. Too cinematic.
The song with Michael Kiwanuka -- MK is like Anderson Paak in that whenever they're featured on a track, it feels like they're song that the main artist is festured on, rather than the other way around. So this sounds like an MK track featuring Black Thought, meaning another out of place track.
Black Thought doesn't go for making "songs" enough on this album. He's just spitting. Go listen to the album, How I Got Over. They have songs on that album, like Dear God, the title track, The Fire, etc. Here though, Thought doesn't go for sharing emotions or catchy choruses (if choruses at all), it's all just spitting. This will kill the album's lasting effect: too many tracks where he's just rapping, not enough "songs".

I agree about the album not really having any “songs”.
Like you can pretty much take any verse from this and swap it for another and you wouldn’t even notice.

Those songs had some weight and were more than just lyrical sparring. I would also put “Because” in that category. More introspective and social commentary. But I agree and would’ve liked some more “songs” on this. But I’m really enjoying the album. Certain songs are definitely sticking with me.

I haven't wanted to go back to the album, and that's a good thing. Sometimes I really like an album on the first listen and I want to save it for later to preserve the freshness. Been a while since I have had that desire.

1. The Darkest Part [ft. Raekwon and Kid Sister] 2. No Gold Teeth 3. Because [ft. Joey Bada$$, Russ and Dylan Cartlidge] 4. Belize [ft. MF Doom] 5. Aquamarine [t. Michael Kiwanuka] 6. Identical Deaths 7. Close to Famous 8. Saltwater [ft. Conway the Machine] 9. Voilas & Lupitas
Would have been devastating. Great album all around.

So I didn't read any of this thread at all before or after the album dropped but I played the album this morning for the first time and its really great. So well produced and black thought killed it. Fans can't say this guy doesn't have a classic now. This is a future classic for sure.
Favorite Tracks:
No Gold Teeth Belize ft. MF Doom Strangers ft. Asap Rocky and RTJ

Only song I wasn't crazy about was the opener because I've heard that sample flipped before and that took away from it's wow factor. Other than that, this album is a good listening experience to me.

EDIT: Strangers is garbage What makes you say that? I thought everyone brought it on that track. The beat is so out of place. DM is clearly trying to get the RTJ sound. I think I'm just over that sound. A$AP Rocky killed it for sure.

Its black thoughts classic. Maybe it might not be universal but ur prolly not gonna get any better from this guy. This capped off him dancing around a solo for decades. Its great.

It's so bizarre that people wanted him to do solo material, as if he wasn't the rapper of the roots and a primary force behind it all. It's just marketing nonsense.
How I got over ftw.

Haven’t ran this back since last week.
That’s the problem with Black Thought solo sht.
Albums are forgettable.
Rhymes are impeccable. Beats are above average.
And I’m done fkn with it after 5 spins. WHY DOE?
The Roots sht never gets old.
Maybe he’s missing Malik B. You need a so so rapper to highlight how dope Black Though actually is. Malik B cleaned the palate no h**o, then BT blew up the spot each track.
We all know Black Thought is blessed as an MC but he’s better in smaller doses rhyming with his boys.

It's the lack of songs. The Roots had tracks like 75 Bars, but then also had songs like Atonement and Understand.

Its strange anything he puts out becomes soo niche, considering the massive talent
The freestyle promos are ALWAYS straight flames, support from everywhere then when the music drops, nothin

I listened again with the videos on YouTube and I highly recommend listening that way after a full listen once or twice.

man i sound like such a douche in the way i write off the roots in my last post.
to clarify so yoda (and most of you) don't unfriend me, like pigeon mike said, it just never sticks with me. i bought every album over the years and maybe played them a handful of times each lol
def had some jams along the way though. i also forgot to mention i love that what they do track with raphael sadiq
i like that song guru did with the roots on jazzmatazz 3. i was bumpin high school high soundtrack last night. their track on there was sounding cool.
i will def be checking this new one eventually and hoping i dig it. some of the guests aren't my favorites like rtj and asap but i have been able to stomach a few of their tracks thru the years. i try not to let the guest choices be a deciding factor on whether or not i check an album cuz sometimes they surprise me.
