dope track. to bad SOI2 is really hit and miss like most ras kass albums though. would be a lot better if he just kept it raw but he wants to do commercial, radio s**t on a few tracks. bunch of great tracks on it though.

Sometimes I wonder why rappers with a predominately larger underground appeal bothers to sneak in a "for the radio" track when it's highly unlikely it will get any attention there. Why not be just true to your roots and satisfy the core fans??

^9 out of 10 times because it's the kind of song they wanna make. I doubt Ras Kass or Diamond D felt pressured into creating it. Ras probably wanted something with a specific tempo or just heard this and liked it and went this direction with it.

^exactly. it started for ras on his 2nd album rasassination and he been doing ever since but not on all projects. i cant stand it when dudes try to play both sides of the fence (underground/mainstream) and their albums suffer because of it.

just sounds weird when an album is mostly raw, underground style beats but then a few trap or mainstream and/or radio style beats thrown in and sticking out so bad. annoying.
i hear you though lex, im sure guys like ras just do what they feel but maybe not realizing it makes the album less cohesive.

As for this track, I feel like the beat is very DITC. Sounds like something Big L woulda rhymed on during the Big Picture era. Dude raps like 24 bars then there's a break in the song (no hook) and he goes straight back to spitting for like 32 bars.. If this is a "for the radio" track the radio would be the s**t, lol.. Are we listening to the same song??

"midnight run" with cee lo green- a bit cheesy on the pop tip "street superstar" on the neo soul tip with the singing hook. actually pretty dope. "wht xt shxts" with the cheap auto tune chorus "ll cool J" with Snoop is kinds dope but such a generic smooth track for the ladies with the soft hook etc. "trapped music" on the trap s**t "can u feel it" on the mainstream tip is just ok

I was responding to wubarrt but didn't realize he was responding to a comment of yours earlier in the post so that's my bad. Yeah Ras has done quite bit of that in his career. But my remark as to why remains my POV. I was like "This joint? THIS is too commercial??" lol

^ yeah man, as you said, 2 32 line verses with a hard beat and no chorus is probably not commercial.haha

It's just that trying to get through the entire album is difficult when it's broken up by these radio tracks. It really spoils the mood and kills the album theme. Especially for an album that's the sequel of a classic that has tremendous replay value.

No doubt. I feel y'all. I'm kinda surprised Roc Marci never really does that considering the artists he likes to listen to.

^ i totally agree maxxx and like you said it didnt stick out back then as much. seems like hes more all over the place now though with UG s**t, radio and trap and neo soul etc. he might think its well rounded but with production its not that simple- it ruins the cohesiveness. train wreck at a few points.
to be honest, even the beats i like on SOI2 dont stick out as really ill. he tends to pick more average beats and producers tbh.

thar new ras has a handfull of raw real tracks but noen feature a sample or drums that can make the song ILL! the other issue is that like past or even all ras albums- the album lacks cohesion as it features some mainstream/club style joints, a trappy one and the neo soul ones with singy song hooks. ras sucks at albums.
