Holy s**t!!!!
Yes tippi, you're missing out. Season one is a must-see. If you've ever seen the movie "The Paperboy", it's like that but a little less trashy

yeah i just don't watch too much tv these days, i'm really out of the loop and there's so much out there that it gets overwhelming lol.
i've heard season 1 of true dective is a masterpiece and they dropped the ball with season 2, but it doesn't really matter because each season is self contained. one of my friends just brought it up the other night and had the same reaction as you when i said i'd never seen it, so i guess i should get on that.

yes, tippi, season one is a must watch. put it at the top of your priorities in terms of what to watch next.
the reason season two sucked is a complicated writer thing. you see, one guy wrote all of season one and all of season two. that's very rare for tv nowadays. he originally started writing season one with the thinking that it'd be a film script, but then realized it was getting way, way too long for that, so they made a show and it was amazing. anyway, the thing about season one is that this writer guy put everything into it; his whole life led up to the completion of that season's scripts. but then, when it came out and people were going nuts about how good it was, hbo was like, "give us another one for next year". the writer, maybe a little drunk from all the acclaim he was getting, agreed to write another season for next year. in other words, he had years to come up with season one, but less than a year to come up with season two. no wonder it wasn't as good. if this sounds familiar at all, it's exactly what happened to the wachowski bros with the matrix movies (ie spend years writing the first film, but then less than a year to write the two sequels because the studios are too excited and throwing too much money around to wait).
season one of true detective was original and inspired. the writer, with less than a year to write a whole second season, knew he couldn't come up with something as original as season one in that amount of time, so instead: "if i can't do something new, i'll just do the same thing but more". more characters, more plot, more macho philosophical brooding. and the end result was a total mess of excess. luckily, the people at hbo and this writer were wise enough to see where the problem was, and decided to hold off on making season three. the head of hbo said season three will come but not until the writer's ready. that's the right way to do it, which is why season three is worth getting excited about, imo.

One thing I just realized: one thing this teaser shows us is that Pizzolatto is back to f**king with timelines in season three. A thing he did very successfully in S1, and I can't recall him doing at all in S2.
A couple noteworthy facts about S3: David Milch (creator of HBO show, Deadwood) helped do some of the writing with Pizzolatto; Jeremy Saulnier (brilliant director of Blue Ruin and Green Room, and he's perfect for this show) directed the first two episodes, but left after that due to scheduling conflicts; and Scoot McNairy (one of the stars of Halt and Catch Fire, and general dope actor) will play a principal character. And of course Maharshala Ali will star, but that's pretty obvious from the teaser.

I haven't watched the trailer yet, but I'm mildly excited. 1st season was aces and the second season was kind of s**t, but grew on me a little. Didnt think this show was going to come.back from hiatus.

I just started the first season last night. Watched the first episode and it was terrific. Right up my alley in terms of murder mystery with layers upon layers of character development seemingly going to be happening. The only cringe irl moment was the last sentence before the credits.

Clock, have you seen Killing Eve? My gf and I are about to start that.
I'm surprised you never saw True Detective 1 before.

Never saw Killing Eve. You ever peep Night Of? If not check it out next. True Detective was always on my watch list but never had the time to peep it.
